Biography

This is the current cast of Square Zero (The Hyper Manga-core Anime Series). Square Zero is a metal band that is based in London (UK), but sometimes their life is more like an anime series (a bad one at that!) than that great thing known as real life. Come to think of it, if Square Zero was a computer game then it would be a text based adventure. (lots of guess the verb then!)

You can click on any member of the band to get an individual bio.

So where did this Hyper Manga-core Anime Series known as Square Zero begin?

January 2000 – June 2000 (Pilot)

The pilot episode of Square Zero was created in early 2000 though at this time the show had yet to be named. The cast at that time consisted of Jx, Alex, LHK, Phil and James. This pilot did not go down too well and was universally regarded as just plainly bad. Subsequently the writers were fired and it was back to the drawing board.

September 2000 – July 2001 (Series 1)

Due to rewrites and other commitments (Alex going to Greece) the cast didn’t reconvene till September and were a bit more streamlined due to the loss of James. This series took the form of a regular once a week (practice) slot and at this early juncture in time was known as A;BG (Accidental; by golfers). Mid way through this time period the name A;BG was dropped and Phil had also been cast in another production (Mumcuss). By July 2001 Phil, by his own choice, had been written out of the script (car plunging over the side of a cliff, you’ve got to love those scenes.) and the search had begun for a suitable replacement. The good news from this was that a new name for the series had been found. Square Zero was born.

September 2001 - December 2001 (Series 2)

Even though Square Zero was a cast member short they nevertheless soldiered on convinced that the perfect person to fill the void in the little group would appear. When he didn’t the deviously cunning plan of writing an advertisement was hatched, and in a feat of technological genius it was posted on several music forums. But alas that didn’t work either for instead of drawing in a thespian of gargantuan proportions Square Zero had replies from a 14 year old guitarist, a vocalist that gave up before his screen test and some Brazilian bassist, the latter of which only appeared in one episode before his untimely demise (killed by his evil twin). (We never said that the script writers were any good!). Even with these set backs Square Zero managed to film the studio episodes where two song demos were recorded. These were Open Road Through the Old Country and Vision (which included a cameo appearance by Phil, still no better a thespian than when he left). These demos are still available in the MP3 section. It was at this time when the world of Square Zero would be turned upside down for suddenly out of nowhere Goatboy appeared.

December 2001 – May 2002 (Series 3)

Goatboy was a revelation and finally it seemed as if the series would go somewhere, no longer plagued by dodgy actors (well at least the dodgiest ones had left) and clichéd writers everything started to fall into place. It was also at this time that Manga Girl (ably played by LHK) first appeared, her (his) childish exuberance helped pave the way for the manga aspect of manga-core.

May 2002 - July 2002 (Series 4)

Even though this line up worked like a well oiled machine there were still cries for more from some quarters and thus the American Bird was added to the cast. Disaster, the episodes now became patchy and monotonous. Bird just wasn’t a consistent performer and it wasn’t long before he just disappeared. His fans all claim that aliens took him and that he is now rocking it up with Elvis, the truth however will always remain a mystery. But even with this loss Square Zero stepped into the digital age and logged online with the first version of their website, yes it was at this time that this thing you are now reading was made.

July 2002 - June 2003 (Series 5)

The show got better again this series with highlights including the notorious party episode (the gig at Marcus Moron’s and Pippa Girlscout’s house party, 01/09/02) and the hilarious Bull and Gate caper (gig at the Bull and Gate, 22/06/03). Even though sadly Alex had to leave for Greece at the end of this series (this time there are no cheesy death scenes) nothing could dim the mood of Square Zero after the Bull and Gate caper which marked the first appearance of Lugash (who is now being played by Goatboy).

July2003 - May2004 (Series 6)

This is the series where the whole world caught Square Zero fever or more accurately a small part of Cambridge's student population. The opening gambit of the series featured the two part episode Chaos in Cambridge in the first part (subtitled PAs Don't Belong in Temporal Anomalies) Square Zero battle to Cambridge only to find that the equipment needed to summon the power of the Mecha Gods is lost in a temporal rift and may turn up at any time! Needless to say the band immediatly spring into action by sitting around and doing nothing. At the climax of the cliff hanger ending Square Zero are left pondering what to do to combat the evil. Part two (subtitled All Time Travel Tales Have A Cop-out Ending) concludes the tale by having Square Zero realise it is far easier to just travel two weeks forward when a new PA will be sorted out and require no effort from the band. They may not be the most hard working but boy are they clever! The series then focused on the bands battles to produce a set of battle hymns trapped in a state of constant flux. The season finale was an episode entitled A Deadly Showdown Over Neo Vegas. In a shocking episode Square Zero find themselves facing fractured evil versions of themselves in a tag team battle of epic proportions. The climax of the battle comes as Jx is distracted by Baron Von Der Blast and is caught by the devastating rockulator of The Legendary Esoteric Warrior himself the dread Count Rockula. As he is about to pick up the win Rockula realises what has transpired and turns on both his comrades allowing the victory to go to Square Zero. But the cost is high, the scene fades to black on Jx lying prone.

May2004 - ???? (Series 7)

The latest series features the shocking relevation that the injuries Jx has suffered where so great that the band has turn to his only possible replacement. The man who cause those injuries in the first place Count Rockula. Can the band possibly survive this? Also are the rumours true that the script writers are considering recasting a role that was removed from a previous series before the episodes even aired?

It's a cheese!!

I, Kumiko Kawai, am in no way responsible for the biography that has been written above. I would like to remind readers that I am not technically a member of the band but merely a member of the website team, and also that most of this happened before I encountered Square Zero. The only part of the biography that is my own is the line about my joining this group. Sorry for the inherent sillyness that runs rampant in Square Zero, the boys shall be severely disciplined for this. It's whipping time!!!!
